Home and Learn: Power BI 2023

Microsoft Power BI 2023

What is Power BI?

The BI stands for Business Intelligence and Power BI is a piece of software for producing interactive dashboards. The interactive part is the main point to grasp about Power BI. As an example of how powerful BI is, take a look at this screenshot:

You might be thinking, "Big deal - it's just a bunch of charts and tables. What's so special about that?" Well, watch this short video below. The thing to take note of is the interactivity - clicking on one visual updates all the others!

Power BI is one big filtering machine. Just about everywhere you click leads to more data being displayed to your audience. Contrast that with PowerPoint, which is mainly a static piece of presentation software. In other words, things move in BI, and they tend not it in PowerPoint.

Download Power BI Desktop

Power BI now comes included with your Microsoft Office 365 subscription. So, if you're subscribed, you don't need to download anything. Just type Power BI into the Windows 10/11 search box and you're good to go.

If you don't have a Microsoft Office 365 subscription, you'll need to install the free Power BI Desktop, which you can get here:

(NOTE: This course uses Power BI 2023. Earlier versions of Power BI look quite different, so you'll need to upgrade. This is quite easy. Go to File > Options and Settings > Options. Click on Preview Features from the left. Make sure to check the box that says Power BI Desktop infrastructure updates. Click OK and restart Power BI.)

Once you habe the Power BI Desktop installed, click below to go to the first lesson, Getting Started with Power BI.
